Temporary Pastoral Assistant Position Available
at Central Presbyterian Church in Downingtown, PA

Central Presbyterian Church in Downingtown, PA in Donegal Presbytery, is looking for a temporary pastoral assistant who would work up to 50% time (22 hours per week). If working post-retirement, the time frame would be that allowed by the Board of Pensions.

The successful applicant will either be an ordained Presbyterian (PCUSA) Teaching Elder, a candidate certified and ready to receive a call, or be a minister from a denomination in communion with PC(USA). Seminary students not yet ready to receive a call may be considered on an individual basis.

The position is available July 1, with start date negotiable.  These are the following job responsibilities to be discussed and finalized based on the skills, experience and interests of the individual:

  • Assist the pastor with weekly worship services and other special services; preach as assigned
  • Administer Lord’s Supper and officiate at weddings (if ordained) and funerals as assigned
  • Make hospital and other critical care visitation
  • Provide communion and pastoral care visitation to church members in their homes, hospitals and nursing homes, as time is available
  • Help establish a church visitation team under the supervision of the pastor
  • Work with established church committees as needed and as time allows
  • Participate in the educational ministries and mission work of the congregation
  • Work with pastor to create stability for the congregation, while facilitating openness to the visioning process during a time of transition

Compensation will be negotiated from half-time presbytery minimum, which will be $55,238 for 2019, with the housing allowance designated as needed. Benefits are negotiable, depending upon the situation. Mileage reimbursement is included at the standard IRS rate. The contract will be negotiated with the Session, in consultation with the Donegal Presbytery's Connecting our Ministries Committee. The length of the contract includes a period of congregation strategic planning, followed by a search for the next pastor.  This contract is estimated to be for 9-12 months with possible continuation. It will include at least a 30-day termination notification on either side. Preference will be given for an applicant who does not intend to apply for the next installed pastor position but applying for the position is not ruled out.
